Pettifogging

(adj.) Focusing on the petty or trivial.

Here’s a prime example of why I love my hobby of geocaching. My wife and I were in the Morningside area of Edinburgh and I decided to check if there were any caches nearby.

One came up that was named “The Wild West of Edinburgh” with all sorts of interesting log entries like “Awesome! Who knew this was in Edinburgh?” and “i can’t say how surprised i was to find something like this here. it is sheer madness.”. Needless to say, we were intrigued, especially given we were only about a tenth of a mile from it.

We turned down the alley toward the spot indicated by the GPS and we walk into what you see above. If we didn’t geocache, we would never know something like this existed. And why does it exist? According to an entry on Edinburgh Spotlight:

Hidden in a street in Morningside, lies Edinburgh’s Wild West. It was built in 1995/6 by Michael Faulkner as part of the ambience of the sales area for a furniture business, which specialised in Southwestern style. There were a number of let units in ‘El Paso’ too, occupied by ceramists and other artists. The project took six months and by great stroke of good luck, one of the employees, and his very talented girlfriend, had worked on the construction of Euro Disney – hence the authentic paint effects and signage.
